It’s not the rates, if you have zero points on your license and are above 25 years old the rates are not bad at all. It’s the MCCA fee

Kinja'd!!!

This is the coverage for my 2 motorcycles. 2012 Honda 450 dirt bike and a 1977 Honda CB750 (both of them plated for the street). Only $114 for both for the year, awesome! Except not, because that is before the $186 per plated vehicle surcharge fee the state adds. I also have to pay this for my truck and my wife’s car as well, so a total of $744 for the year, when there’s only 2 drivers in our house, only 1 of which, me, that can even ride the motorcycles.

What is the MCCA Fee? Basically a big cost savings for the insurance companies.

In the state of Michigan your medical benefits are unlimited if you’re injured in an auto accident and the MCCA makes sure that insurance companies don’t have to pay more than $545,000 of the damages. The MCCA fee is the portion that you pay per vehicle to keep this association going.

I hear that in Finland and Norway my rates would be cheaper. Sweden, not so much.....

And you (on a motorcycle) only get coverage if you hit (or are hit by) a car.

Crony capitalism at it’s finest.

Well that’s if I can prove I was not at fault, because if you’re on a bike, you’re just accepted to be at fault because you’re a speed punk. Which is why I always have my GoPro on when I ride, just in case I get into an accident I have video of what happened.

There are pros and cons here, of course. If MICH did not have this fee, those with the catastrophic lifetime injuries would end up on some sort of gov’t assistance after the system had bankrupted them and then who’d pay? Oh, us again

The real thing that distorts this fee is that it is only paid by those who have insurance. We have a huge number of uninsured - so those who buy insurance must pay for those who don’t. And that becomes a vicious cycle - as the costs go up, fewer people get insurance and so on.

We need to authorize the police to sieze uninsured vehicles on the spot and send them to the crusher. The scrap value would go to the state and into this fund. Everyone would win!

Their website actually says $150 per vehicle, not $186 as I’m being charged. Gotta call Progressive on this now

Steve Lehto for President!!

Honestly, I’d be fine if it was pay per insured driver, but paying per vehicle is what grinds my gears since only 2 of the 4 vehicles we own can be driven at a given time.

That’s the wierd part which I never understood. Unless they think you are letting other people drive your vehicles, they ought to be able to lower your rates when you have more cars/bikes than people. How much damage can a parked vehicle cause?

Yea, I get it. Just odd that I don’t see it on mine but you have it. I’ve also heard that Geico and Progressive were looking to pull out more and more from Michigan because of that right there. Maybe State Farm pays it instead of me paying it? And Progressive passes it onto the customers to save money? Just thoughts.

yeah its definitely a great idea to crush the only transportation that people, who can’t even afford to pay for insurance, have. should do wonders for the Michigan economy.

Michigan’s government has and continues to be run by people who are absolutely ass backwards.

Well its not like Michigan is bursting the seams with public transportation. but it does have a lot of impoverished people who rely on their cars. The state makes it difficult to own a car. so imagine now those people without a car, unable to go to work. Companies loose labor, and people loose income. great economic planning.

04/25/2016 at 14:58

Kinja'd!!!1

Well, the law does say you can go to jail for ONE YEAR and pay a $500 fine for driving without insurance. So I guess I’m cool with that - you can keep your uninsured car and drive it when you get out a year from now.

Kinja'd!!! 450X_FTW > Johnnyazz
04/25/2016 at 15:50

Kinja'd!!!1

If you use something illegally, it’s perfectly acceptable to have it taken away. This is why drunk drivers are put on tethers and they can’t drink, this is why people who use their guns for harm have their guns taken away. Ride a dirt bike down the sidewalk and your dirt bike will be taken away.

So you’re cool with paying taxes to support that person in jail? You’re missing my point on the macro economic effects of all of this. Im arguing for affordable insurance, because of its positive economic impact, and making the point that Michigan has been historically shortsighted on its impact.

im not advocating driving without insurance

Kinja'd!!! Johnnyazz > 450X_FTW

Kinja'd!!!0

Thats missing the point of my argument. one: why is driving without insurance comparable to driving irresponsibly. it doesn’t put people in danger, as your other examples do. two: I’m not arguing for driving without insurance, its a fact that many people have to because of legislature in Michigan, coupled with high crime rates in poor neighborhoods that makes Insurance unafforable. remember these people couldn’t afford to pay their water bills. it was not because they were lazy.

My $15,000 car was over $2K a year to insure in Michigan, Its half that back in New Jersey.

Kinja'd!!!1

And if everyone paid for the insurance they were required to carry, then premiums would drop. Econ 101.

Meanwhile, Mich requires insurance and a registration. Other states require insurance and a registration. Yeah, they’re doing it better than “shortsighted” Michigan.

Kinja'd!!!0

Wow. What an idiotic argument. Yes, you driving without insurance hurts people. When you get in an accident and cause more damage than you can afford to pay out of your own pocket?

Happens every day. The victim of your accident will sue you into bankruptcy and then run themselves into bankruptcy if they didn’t have uninsured motorist coverage.

Funny sidenote? When you have no insurance in MICH, you cannot sue someone who hits you, even if they were grossly negligent. Sitting at a light in your uninsured car and get hit by a drunk driver who crossed the center line and careened out of control? You get nothing. That is one fact that too many people don’t know about.

Kinja'd!!! 450X_FTW > Johnnyazz
04/25/2016 at 16:33

Kinja'd!!!0

Like Steve says, if the people without insurance paid their insurance, then all of our rates would go down. But because we have to pay for those that don’t, ours are only going to go up.

Kinja'd!!! Johnnyazz > SteveLehto
04/25/2016 at 17:21

Kinja'd!!!0

Not when legislature forces insurance to charge more!! I understand that was your original point, but doesn’t change the fact that the legislature increases the cost for EVERYONE. futher straining an unhealthy economic ecosystem.

speaking of idiotic arguments. Michigan is less shortsighted than other states, so Michigan is good.

Insurance RATES are set by the marketplace. Prices are not set by the legislature. It is painfully obvious you have no idea how any of this works. I’m done. You’re obviously a troll.

I’d be surprised if any state ISN’T like this. California sure is. As a person with multiple motorcycles and multiple cars, I hate that pretty much every car seems to be treated as my sole transportation. I tell them that they are for funsies on the weekends and don’t see that many miles per year but it doesn’t seem to change the rates.
